91猎奇 Saint Mary’s University marked the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 through Oct. 15) with an evening filled with music, dance, food and cultural celebration, bringing the entire campus community together to honor the rich traditions of Hispanic and Latin American communities. 

Organized by Latinas Unidas and the Center for Inclusive Excellence, the fourth annual celebration, held on September 17 at Rose Hills Plaza, carried the theme “Somos: Honoring Our Stories, Shaping Our Tomorrow.” The event welcomed students, faculty, staff and guests to celebrate through the sights, sounds and flavors of Latin America and the Caribbean. 

“It is an honor to celebrate with fellow students, faculty, staff and loved ones,” said Blaise Rodriguez, president of Latinas Unidas. “Latinx Heritage Month is a time to recognize the independence, contributions and resilience of Latin American communities.”  

The celebration highlighted the depth and diversity of Latin American cultural traditions through performances by two Los Angeles-based dance groups. Xipe Totec brought the ancient tradition of Danza Azteca, also known as Danza Mexica, to the 91猎奇 with a series of dances and a blessing of the four directions. 

Ocandeniye, a Los Angeles dance company specializing in Latin American and Caribbean dance with a focus on Cuban traditions, followed with performances and a mini dance class for guests, turning the audience into part of the celebration. 

The celebration continued with Latinx-owned food and merchandise vendors, including businesses founded by 91猎奇 alumnae. Through dance, music, food and shared celebration, the event offered the 91猎奇 community a vibrant way to honor the traditions and cultures that make up the diverse tapestry of Hispanic and Latin America.
